Today’s painting by Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun is this beautiful portrait of Marie-Catherine de Lamoignon de Basville, Marquise d’Aguesseau de Fresnes (1759-1849), which was painted in Paris in 1789.

Madame la Marquise belonged to a well connected Parisian aristocratic family and married her husband, an Avocat Général of the Parlement de Paris, in January 1775, two months before her sixteenth birthday. The couple’s only child, Marie Félicité Henriette, was born in 1778 and would marry her first cousin, Octave Gabriel Henri de Ségur, the son of her father’s sister Antoinette, Comtesse de Ségur, who was also painted by Madame Vigée Le Brun.
