I am so excited to have found this picture! I have been searching for years for a portrait of Marie-Stéphanie de Choiseul-Stainville, Duchesse de Choiseul and sister of Françoise-Thérèse, the Princesse Joseph de Monaco and here she is!
This beautiful portrait was originally thought to have been painted by Greuze, but was actually the work of Jeanne-Philibert Ledoux (1767-1840). The little boy at her side is probably her eldest son, Étienne, who was born on the 18th September 1786.
It feels so weird to actually see a portrait after searching for one for so long. I was looking at her wedding contract earlier on as well and it was really touching and bizarre to see the signatures at the bottom of the page – lots of very boldly written ‘Choiseul’ alongside a childishly scrawled ‘Choiseul Stainville’, which must have been her signature.
