A domestic scene

A Domestic Scene by Johann Schenau.

I stumbled on this fascinating painting while hunting for some Fair Unknowns for the writing challenge. How gorgeous is this? I love the attention to detail that has gone into painting the sitting room, the pretty wallpaper, the parquet floor, the sleeping dog, the direct gaze of the girl in the centre of the painting, the preoccupation of the man at the side, the industrious clerk in the background and the splendid rose pink gown of the woman sitting by the window.

You can almost smell the beeswax used to polish the floors and furniture, the crisply spicy scent of the roses, carnations and lavender in pot pourri, the welcoming aroma of coffee and hot chocolate.
