Marie Antoinette by Drouais

16 March 2010

Portrait of the young Dauphine Marie Antoinette in 1772, when she was just 16 years old and wearing full court dress. This painting was commissioned by Louis XV in September 1772 and was destined to hang in the King’s grand cabinet at Choisy. The young princess is depicted wearing a gown and jewels that she would have worn to a state occasion and has an amusing sidelong gleam in her eye that is reminiscent of portraits of her elder sister, Maria Amalia of Parma.
