Lucrezia Borgia

Two fascinating medals in the collections of the National Gallery in Washington, depicting Lucrezia Borgia. It’s likely that both were made by the studio of Giancristoforo Romano to commemorate her marriage on the 2nd February 1502 to Alfonso d’Este, the future Duke of Ferrara.

Lucrezia was described by contemporaries as being graceful with long, thick corn coloured hair, hazel eyes and a lovely face. You can certainly see something of her famous charm in the second of the two medals, where she is shown with her customary simple hairstyle.
