Lady Georgiana Spencer, Duchess of Devonshire

Portrait miniature of Lady Georgiana Spencer, Duchess of Devonshire in 1774 by Jeremiah Meyer.

I haven’t really touched on the infamous Duchess of Devonshire in this blog yet, which is probably a bit odd. I think that she may, in part and rather indirectly, be responsible for my interest in eighteenth century art and culture as I distinctly remember being utterly enthralled by a Mollie Hardwicke short story about her in the Royal Wedding special edition of Woman’s Own in July 1981. Okay, it is probably a bit sad that I remember that in so much detail so let’s move swiftly onwards…

I really love this portrait of Georgiana, painted a few years earlier in 1771 by Romney and looking rather melancholy.
